I'm stuck on the last clue, Z. "The bible lasts: religion's somewhat daft." Unless I've gone wrong somewhere' the pattern is ZE-D. I suspect the answer is ZEND, but I have no idea why.

Okay. I = idealism, anag mislead+i but " twixt life's tough twists and bites?" Why? Why is ZEND ZEN+D or however you get there, "the bible lasts"?...
