Ghostly stereotype

Can the stereotypical 'white sheet ghost' with clanking chains be traced back to a single source? I'm doing research for a documentary on ghosts and wondered if anyone could enlighten me about this...

Have been looking for this for nine years

Originally heard it as a midi on a halloween site. I made a youtube video with the fragment of the melody that I could remember and a picture that I think was the background of the webpage it was on....
