Weight Restrictions

Can anyone tell me if there are standard weight restrictions on UK roads? I know that certain roads have restrictions imposed by the local council for reasons of safety etc but is there a general rule...

Are there standard weight restrictions on UK roads?

I always thought that there were standard weight restrictions on UK roads. Something like 44 tonners were not allowed on a country road with no road markings. Is this true or are all restrictions...
