Total ipdo beginner....

How do i transfer songs from a shared file on itunes (music downloaded from live wire) onto my ipdo nano? Do the song files need to be in the itunes music library?

Please help me I can't get the songs on itunes onto my ipod. My ipod is defitely sync'd.....
