Drinking Water

Is there a difference between Filtered water (using a water jug filter) and Softened Water (from mains water softener unit) ?

I have been trying to find a kitten for weeks now and having no luck! I've tried Cats Protection (they have them, they just won't let me have one because I live near a road - just add me to the list...
