Thick Hair!

I have thick dry hair with a shoulder length bob. No matter which shampoo & conditioner I use, it always springs out at the sides looking very full. I don't want it layered, so any other suggestions...

Does daily use of a hairdryer (on men) damage hair or make then likely to go bald quicker ? What about every other day ?
