Badges?

I happened to look at "my profile" in search of an old thread and noticed that there was a title of "Badges" which had a "3" by the side of it. I'm sure it had "5" yesterday. I've no idea what a "badge" is, could you please explain what this signifies?

Click on 'Badges' under profile and it details them...often not accurately!

Thank you both. A bit like the scouts but not nearly so useful. I think I'll "pass" on badges! I'll probably be stripped of the three I have remaining.

I had 16, now 13- not happy at all.

I made it quite clear I wanted to keep all my badges whether I was entitled to them or not. The fact that I wasn't entitled to 3 of them is inconsequential IMO.

I've got 3 as well and 11 best answers. I can see the badges which look as though they might be right, but there's nothing under the 'best answer' tab.
Is it broke precious, eh, is it broke?

I've never had anything showing under "best answers" though, surprisingly, I do have some.
