Spammers Avatar Showing In Their Profile

Sometimes I look at the profiles of people who are spammers before they get removed....even though they are newly joined, often their profile shows an avatar. Does anyone know if every new member's profile shows their avatar before they are allowed to show it on the questions and answers or is this something to do with how a spammer posts on here?

They probably get an avatar before posting and until then it is not known they are spammers.

But an avatar usually only shows up after 2 weeks of membership (or it used to).

Dunno Retro, but I can't see that a spammer would get away with ten posts before being spotted.

yes, I've noticed that too. One I reported the other day seemed to have been a member for about 10 minutes. Perhaps they already had an avatar registered with Gravatar so it carried over here immediately?

that's what I thought....about posts and membership......
So if someone new and not a spammer joins who has a gravatar avatar, does it show on their profile immediately?
If not, then I am wondering how some spammers show an avatar on their profile (not on questions or posts) from the moment they join?

Is there perhaps a difference between the avatar showing up on someone's profile, and showing up attached to the posts they make?

yes jim, that's what I wondered....we need a gravatar member non spammer newbie to test the hypothesis.

case in point....new member showing an avatar.....not suggesting they are a spammer but how does it show so soon on profile?

As far as I am aware it's always shown in the profile but blocked over the probation period on the threads.
