it's true that ian fleming created Bond as a particular person with particular characteristics and traits, http:// www.ian fleming .com/ja mes-bon d-2/s in the 1950s, and a character like that would be something of an anachronism if he was portrayed like that in modern films.
so is Sir Roger right that film makers should remain faithful to Fleming's description of James Bond? or is the Bond franchise now bigger than one man's vision of his character?

After Stella Rimington became head of M15, the character of M became female in the films. In the 1950s homosexuality was illegal, but it isn't now. So in theory, it would be possible for Bond to be gay. But, I don't think a gay or female Bond would work.

I notice that 'our Roger' was careful not to include black amongst his descriptions and yet was quoted as saying.
/// “It is not about being homophobic or, for that matter, racist – it is simply about being true to the character.” ///
Come on Sir Roger, the word black is not amongst the no, no words, well at least not yet.

Bond can't be gay.
And yes - I know there was the hint that he may have batted for the other side in that scene from 'Skyfall', but the character just isn't gay.
Full stop.
He doesn't need to be black, and he doesn't need to be a woman.
This argument from both sides is now getting tedious. There needs to be opportunities for great actors, male, female, white, black, Asian and so on. We don't actually need Bond to be black or Dr Who to be a woman or Shaft to be white.
What we need is interesting characters and roles which people want to see.
By the way - Moneypenny is now played by a black actress.
Didn't cause that much of a fuss.

I used to visit Deal, in Kent, quite frequently some years ago. I often saw Charlie Hawtrey mincing along the prom there. He frequented many (well, almost all) of the pubs in the town and could often be found cavorting with young Royal Marines from their nearby school of music. He would have made a good lead for the Death Wish films :-)
//Idris Elba for the next Bond?? //
the latest film is on the verge of release; the next film might be expected to go into production for release in 2018. daniel craig has hinted he might yet make one more film. this means that the "new bond" would probably debut in 2020, by wich time idris elba will be 48. when set against other bond actor debuts, idris would be the oldest by a good few years. sorry but it won't be him.
