Hotel Or Resort?

The Jamaica thread prompts to to ask something I have been thinking about for a while.
Back in my youth , a holiday was all about the resort or city you were going to. The actual hotel was secondary. Now it all seems to be about which hotel you are going to. When I went on holiday the hotel was just a roof over your head while you explored the city or resort. Now the idea seems to be that you just stay in the Hotel apart from a day trip or two.
Years back I simply arranged a 3 day stop over in Cairo. I just got off the aircraft and took a taxi into the city. I asked the taxi driver to find me a cheap hotel. He said ''$10 OK?'' I thought $10 a night was cheap and agreed. When I came to pay the 3 nights bed and breakfast bill it was $10 for the entire 3 days. They just loved US$ it was hard to get anyone to take Egyptian £s. I did a tour to the Pyramids and Luxor, again they wanted $ not Egyptian £.
After the 3 days I got a flight to Kenya and just got a bus into Nairobi and walked around looking for a cheap hotel. Again I found one at a very good price and the price in $ was a lot less than in Kenyan Shillings.

You did a tour of the pyramids and Luxor all in three days? Blimey! What did you find in the bazaar? A flying carpet or a genie in a bottle?

The Pyramids are just on the outskirts of Cairo ,not way out in the desert as they make it look on the travel programs. The Pyramids and Luxor (which is just a few miles along the Nile) are a day trip from Cairo. I did the Pyramids and Luxor one day,the Egyptian Museum with the Tutankhamun relics the next day and a tour of Cairo the last day.

The bazaars are full of Tourist tat. I refused to go near any of them.
Only things I spent any money on was two meals and a few beers. The hotel breakfast was just an egg on toast but not bad at $10 for 3 days B&B.
the resort is important obviously otherwise one would not be going there ,but in our case as we get older and one of us is disabled the first choice now must be the right hotel,it must be comfortable, have no steps, must have a lift etc.
one problem we had this year was the comfy chairs in the bars and lounge areas ,they were too low down to get up from again ,also the bathroom must have a shower that is easy to get in and out ,the toilet in the room can also be too low sometimes ,all these sort of things are not obvious to anyone who is able bodied
Absolute rubbish!! Luxor is hundreds of miles from Cairo. Why do you do this?
ps. And Eddie, I know where the pyramids are - and I know where Luxor is. I really do know Egypt.
My thoughts exactly Eddie !

Not really sure why people fork out sums of money, just to sit around in posh lobbies or beside identical swimming pools. They get to see nothing of the scenery and culture of the country that they visiting.
500 miles apart according to google
Magic carpet.
When we went to Egypt we stayed in Luxor and Cairo was a day's train ride or a flight away

Eddie FYI

21 Jan 2016 - Road transport is not recommended between Cairo and Luxor as it is a whopping 419 miles as the crow flies!
As to the question, we are all different and want different things from a holiday. People work damned hard these days and sometimes the chance to do sod all for a week or two is highly attractive.
You are not getting confused with the Valley of the Kings are you Eddie?
Perhaps they moved the Pyrmids from when Eddie left - like the did the Philae temple!
I like my comforts now, so will pay for the best hotels I can afford. Nothing like a bit of luxury after a day's travelling around the sights and attractions.
also, people within a family are different. I couldnt think of anything worse than exploring ancient monuments and culture, but my husband couldnt think of anything worse than sitting by a pool. My daughter likes a mixture of stuff to do and pooling
It would drive me mental to stay in a hotel all week. Never done all inclusive and never want to.
I'm the same Tilly. I can't believe I used to enjoy camping!!!
apple maps says Luxor to Cairo is a 7 hour drive
Oh and the hotel is important depending on where you are staying - in Vegas for example you spend a lot of time at the hotels because its your gambling base, so I spend quite some time looking for the right hotel.
I liked camping, Prudie but I do like a decent bathtub now, with lots of bubbles. The toilet comes in handy too.
