In my opinion The Beatles are the most over rated band of all time closely followed in no particular order by U2, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Oasis, REM. Just because all of these artists are popular (fair play to them for making money on limited talent) doesn't make them good. Let me know what you all think

I've got agree with all you've said, mind you, i'm not a Punk fan either.

So you dont think that they've stood the test of time (with a few exceptions in your list!) because they are good and their music is adored by millions because of their talant?

i agree with you about the beatles, however led zep were an awesome band as are the stones still,i love music in all forms and dont limit myself to 1 style,to my mind the pretty things were the greatest band of all,and yes i do love punk as well stiff little fingers are still fantastic to this day

the reason so many people bought their music was because of the imagination of their advertising people. they have a limited amount of talent mind you but I just get fed up of hearing radio and television stations playing the likes of John Lennon and the beatles Elvis Presely and Jim Morrison on their annavrsaries or birthdays.

You have the other people who are considered "mediocre" (at best) who don't get a mention like the late great Stuart Adamson and Frank Zappa. Could somebody please explain why this is because i am at a loss to understand it

Tell you what, if McFly, Liberty X or any of the other 'top' bands (and I use the term very loosely) of today are still doing it in 15 or 20 years time, then get back to me OK. Until then I don't really think you know what you're talking about !

i agree stuart adamson was very good as is zappa, the problem is the majority of radio listeners want to hear commercial pap, thats why you mainly hear rubbish on the radio as the late great joe strummer sang,i dont listen to commercial stations for this very reason,i choose to listen to specialist stations, the people who matter (us) appreciate these talents thats what matters

whattheheck you have just proved my point that because you are popular doesn't mean that you are good. None of those that you mentioned will be around in 5 years time not to mind 20 years time.

sfsorrow, i take your point (put extremely well) and i don't limit myself to 1 genre either. i use the name punkfan because punk is what got me listening to music in the first place

I always think of it this way.........you ask any kid of say 10 who Elvis and The Beatles were and they'll know. How many of today's bands (and I use the term band loosely here!) will the next generation have heard of?

'Nuff said!

so what?
Oh brilliant reply jamesy boy- do you use that awesome gobsmacking, thought provoking response each time you post?

You are so right, The Beatles were overrated.

That is why their music is still played and listened to 35 years after they split.

That is why there are loads of tribute bands.

That is why their songs are still recorded by "young" singers of today (With a little help from my friends and McFly for example).

That is why they were voted best composers of the 20th century.

That is why almost every single they made went to number 1.

That is why they are admired all over the world, not just the UK.

That is why Liverpool named their airport after John Lennon.

That is why in 1965 they held the top 6 places in the USA singles top 20.

That is why a number of their albums STILL feature in the top 10 best albums of all time.

Go listed to Revolver. 16 classic songs, all written by the Beatles, with a style ranging from pure pop (Yellow Submarine), avant garge (Tomorrow Never Knows), soul (Got to get you into my life), ballads (For no one and Here there and everywhere) and everything in betwen.

Listen to the production, the instruments used (French Horn on "For No One"), the wierd world of John Lennon on Tomorrow Never Knows.

Read the reviews on Amazon.

Then grow up.

Well I guess that's you told then innit punky huh? LOL

Proves my point yet again "Because you are popular doesn't mean you are good" .

That way of thinking probably means that you think that Liverpool WERE good enough to win the Chumpions sorry Champions league last year

Punk Fan

There's no way to win/lose this argument. We can go on forever, but no-one can ever win this argument because all art is responded to with subjective responses.

...and as any fool knows, Steps were the greatest band in the world ever.

Hey, I really did like Steps!

Yes I'm fully aware of how sad that makes me look!

Boo

Of course, I was kidding about Steps being the greatest band in the world, no-one can really compare to the majesty of The Cheeky Girls. But getting back to Punk Fan's previous points, I think the bands that he mentions all have validity in their fields.

Out of his list, I really like REM and Oasis. I don't listen to the music of any of the others, but I can appreciate how their fans must cherish them, because there are artists I call myself a fan of, and to me their the greatest acts in the world.

Hope that makes sense.

Enjoyed reading some of the posts here, some good points raised. Let's see if we can re-ignite it shall we. Going back to punk fan's quote of "punk is what got me listening to music in the first place", I'm trying to make the connection between 'punk' and 'music' ?, unless you actually enjoy being shouted, sworn & spat at during an evenings entertainment. Again, I use the term loosely ! I know you can't tar all punk bands with the same brush, but...
By the way, I think you've proved your own point punk fan, I'm sure The Sex Pistols, The Stranglers etc etc were popular, but it don't mean they were any good does it ?

with the beatles you have to remember that they were the 1st exponents of this type of music ie they borrowed from no-one with all approaches.any band from the 60's that can go from 'help' and 'hard days night' to sgt pepper in a few short years must be doing something right.and the fact that after 40 years their songs are still remembered shows they will stand the test of time.

the only punk band that will do this are the pistols and then only due to one album - 'never mind the bolls'.

just because you are not a fan of the bands mentioned doesnt mean that they are not great.personally im not fan of the stones or led zep or rem but you have to appreciate what they have done.for me any band/person that can stay at the top of their game after many decades and albums has achieved greatness.

Totally agree wuith Mattk's point and like the way that whattheheck is try to stir things up.

However, I have to admit - I always let out a groan whenever it's an anniversary of his birth/death etc.
