dvd recorder dubbing

Hi I wonder if anyone can tell me about dubbing on to a disc from hard drive. I have just purchased a DVD recorder and recorded accidently onto hard drive in HQ format but the RW discs i bought to transfer it to are not long enough to take the whole film. Is there any way that i can transfer from the hard drive onto a disc (do they only make them 2hrs long which is the length of recording time for HQ recording. Any advice will be greatly received

The only way you can do it is to edit the recording into two halves, and burn it on to two discs. Not ideal.

But at least you now know, and will record in the appropriate format in future.

I thought about that but I cant see how I can it does not say anything about splitting only title splitting and that just gives me 2 full recordings. I also make sure now that I record in longer play

With my Philips I can edit the recording.

What I would need to do is 'hide' the last half of the recording.

I now have the original recording on the hard drive - say 3 hours, and the edited version at one and a half hours.

Burn the edit to disk 1. When you are sure it has burned ok, delete the EDITED version ONLY from the hard drive.

You still have the full recording. Now 'hide' the first half.

You will now have the original 3 hours and the edited version - which will be the second half at 1.5 hours.

Burn this version to disk 2.

I hope I've explained this clearly - it does seem complicated if you've never done it.

The other option is to use a software program named dvdshrink. You can download it for free from

You can then get the complete video onto one dvd disc.

Getting it from his dvd recorder to his hard drive could be a problem though.

What make and model of DVD recorder is it? Have you checked if it can take dual layer discs (twice the capacity of ordinary ones)? Mine is an LG and can take these discs.

PS. Mine has a 'split' facility rather than a 'hide' so as to split my recordings.

Mine is a Daewo and I have tried to hide chapters but the film I taped has 31 chapters and it will only allow me to hide 10 and when I tried dubbing it, it was still too big unless I tried dubbing it the wrong way. I have a split title but all it did was take one minute off the recording and I ended up with 2 full sized recordings. As for the dual layer disc Wideboy, will it state that in the booklet because I cant see anything about it in there.

Which model? Some of the lower models are + recording only and no dual-layer. Some advertise dual format but this normally means that they record + and - discs.

The model number is DH-6100P,/DHR-8100P. It says I can use DVDplus or minus RW
DVD+R
DVD-R

Jennymac, yes, that does make sense. Daewoo make a big play of their "dual media support" but it looks as if this means that it can record + and - discs (a good thing). Doesn't look as if it can do dual-layer (sometimes there is a sticker on the machine advertising the fact). Scrutinise the manual carefully (especially the specification). Also have a look here (the model is probably too new for anyone to have sent in a report on the kind of media). Why not register with the site and post just like here?

Jennymac, on the point about splitting/hiding - it looks as if you split by putting chapters at the start and end of both sections of the film. Don't know how a film recorded from TV has 31 chapters - check the manual and see if the machine is set to generate chapters automatically and then see if you can switch that feature off. Cdfreaks gives some help on this.
