Looking at my musical taste, I should like Coldplay. Growing up with Elvis (albeit he was dead) and the Beatles, I moved on to Bowie and The Beach Boys. Come the late 80's and early 90's, after The Smiths I got heavily into the Brit Pop phenomena, esp The Stone Roses and then Suede. Since then, apart from the absolute classics like The Monkees, Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen, 99 percent of my modern music is still guitar based Rock/Indie. I quite like the new breed of them, i.e The Feeling, Kooks, Artic Monkeys, Kaiser CHiefs etc etc but why oh why do I not only like Coldplay I positively hate them?

I hate Chris Martin with a passion, his voice, his manner, his lyrics- infact his whole way. If Bowie or Brett Anderson sang his songs I would probably like them.

There are few singers I will actively turn off the radio or TV to, but Coldplay are one. That "I WILL FIX YOU" actually makes me violently angry.

Can any music buffs offer an explanation for this. It can not be chemistry, because I have never met the guy. It is not jealousy because I think Gweneth Palthrow is a skinny ugly bint. What is it? And why?

I agree with you completely here. I grew up with much the same music and love REM, Radiohead and most guitar led rock. I even like Marilyn Manson occasionally! At my age I should like Coldplay but they are so bland and boring!
like much the same as you ,love Pulp,Radiohead & Marillion too but i don't like Coldplay either
ZOMG!!! Fix you is one of those songs that makes me all lump in throat and teary eyed. Its the way you can be desperately depressed with him, but when that little bit kicks in half way through its so uplifting. I love it.

I put it down to your heart of stone Wardy. I think the emotions in the song make you feel uncomfortable and the only way you can express yourself is through anger and violence.
Or it could be your distaste for all things west country!
Oh and I am an A* indie princess.
It could be that you like me can't stand the fact that he appeared on the music scene and then disappeared up his own a@se. I can name a few like Chris Martin: Bono, Sting, Geldof. Just because people listened to a few of their songs, they started to believe the media hype and thought we would listen to them preaching to us.
At the end of the day I want to listen to music. I don't want to listen to bands churning out the same bland sound over and over again whilst telling us how we should be living, voting and giving our money to charity.
I agree that Bono takes this a bit too far but these people use their celebrity status to heighten awareness. Like it or not, I for one, listen to rock stars more than I do politicians. They have no agenda. Doing charity work isn't necessary, I have been to fair trade and amnesty international gigs and have really enjoyed them.

Drop the debt, Live 8, Live Aid, the Tsunami gigs were all worth while. Where is Sting wrong in wanting to save the rainforests?

Sting??? You mean the same Sting who advertised 4.2ltr Jaguar cars that burn about 12 miles to the gallon? Oh that Sting.

Hypocritical, blonde, talentless to55-pot.

Bloody Sting. Music for dads. And sad dads at that.

If Chris Martin and Sting ever release a duet, I will kill myself.
On Joe-the-Lion your comments on Sting made me laugh out loud - despite my hursband trying to convince me he has talent I believe his talent evaportated once he was no longer The Police. And all this tantric business - gets right on my 'chest' if you see what I mean.

Anyway I know what you mean about Chris Martin, he is so bl**dy annoying. The problem is sometimes I hear one of their songs - like "The Scientist" or - sorry- "Fix You" and before my brtain really kicks in and goes "Oh no, Coldplay" I find myself thinking "That's quite nice". So I suppose I do like them - but grudgingly and to my shame! And I do have their first album.

I do like Keane though - especially 'Fatty' Tom Chaplin's voice. And I DO like The Monkees. One of the first presents my husband gave me when we started going out was a home made Monkee's collection. Awww!
Funnily enough, Fix You is about the only Coldplay song I do like. There's something unbearably smug and smarmy about that band, and Chris Martin in particular.

I much prefer The Arcade Fire, Jarvis Cocker, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Little Man Tate, The Shins, The Bees, The Dears, Tilly & The Wall, The New Pornographers, and if I feel like a good old bounce (not a pretty sight), The Fratellis.
