Probably because some over-paid advertising executive was desperate to find a way of convincing the manufacturer that his company could successfully relaunch the brand.

To be slightly less cynical, there might actually be some valid market research behind the name change. If you were to go out into the street and ask people what the word 'bounty' means to them, most people would probably mention chocolate bars (with a few possibly also mentioning mutiny). Very few people would define the word as 'a munificent gift'. On the other hand, if you were to ask people what the word 'plenty' means to them, they'd say things like 'a lot', 'loads' or 'more than enough'. If you want to suggest that a kitchen roll is very long, and can mop up loads of liquid, 'Plenty' would seem to be more appropriate than 'Bounty'.

I can remember when kitchen rolls were introduced there were 70 sheets to a roll. Then it dropped to 60. Then Bounty dropped theirs to 56. Then they even dropped it to 50. That's pretty mean of them. Do they think that the general public don't notice this sneaky shrinkage? I suspect that the name change is a 'grey suits' attempt to psychologically sway people into thinking their smaller-than-others rolls are more desirable. I've no problem with the quality and I'll stock up on it, but only when I see it on a really special offer. At the RRP I've always considered it to be well overpriced for what you get.
A swedish company called SCA have bought Bounty from Proctor & Gamble and decided to re-brand costing 8 million. It will be interesting to see if Which award it Best Buy status in its new guise.
Usually something to do with Europe. The same way they renamed Marathon to Snickers, Opal Fruits to Starburst and Jif to Cif, irritating so and so's.
From their site

"Why did you change the name from Bounty to Plenty?

The new Plenty name was chosen as it is a great way of reminding people about how versatile the UK's leading household towel is! The new name is a great chance for us to give Plenty a boost and show our customers just how useful it can be when used in and around the home - from mopping up spills in the kitchen or car, to cleaning the bathroom, or even as a handy napkin for picnics and BBQs.

Whilst the name is changing, you can be sure that Plenty will still deliver excellent performance and value for money, with the same great strength and absorbency that people rely on."

Yeah, whatever......
