Why do airline co's advertise fantastic bargains for ONE WAY travel? Do they think we don't want to come home again? I don't get it.

Well yes! Twice, once in 2007 and once in 2008 i went to Portugal for 6 months and 3 months so only purchased one way tickets as i was unsure of return dates.

Well Yeah! but the vast majority of us would like the bargain fare's to cover there & back wouldn't we?

EasyJet treat any return as two singles, each leg being priced separately. You don't get a discount on the whole trip by booking 'return'.It's always whatever two singles cost. Therefore they advertise the cheapest outward fare from the UK.
Ryanair do the same.
I usually book one way.

I have to fly to visit my BF, and I'm never really sure when I'll come home.
Also everyone in soaps gets a single fair to Spain or South America when they are visiting family.
