my cats back legs have suddenly gone paralysed over a few days he has gone from walking slowly to not being able to jump on sofa to dragging his legs behind him. the vet said xrays but said nothing felt broken and she manipulated him and he wasnt in pain so doubts anything is broken. she says at 3 hes too young for arthritis. the xrays will cost 'a couplw of hundred' pounds and the next step is ct scan which she says is v expensive. i think the xray wont show anything and dont have the spare money. i work so dont qualify for help. i feel si stressed and worried for my little cat.
Are you seriously telling us that your cat has been hiding under the bed, without food or drink, or going to the toilet, since last Friday, and you have done nothing? Please tell me this isn't true.
i also can't believe that, ladybirder. i actually think this is now very cruel to the cat. either they need to get a new vet (who gives a sh.i.t) or you need to consider other options for your pet. it sounds like she has been suffering for long enough. do something!
You need to phone the vet, PDSA or a cat charity now and explain the situation in full. I don't believe any vet would leave an animal untreated like that. My own vet has a sign informing you to let the vet know if you are unable to pay for the treatment, it certainly doesn't say they won't treat the animal. Also, my mum used PDSA before years ago when she just couldn't afford the vet and they helped her.
See my post @ 20.15 china giving a link to eligibility for help from the PDSA. The OP says she doesn't qualify, ie she doesn't get Housing Benefit or CT Benefit.
Liquid, I don't believe you couldn't find one vet near you who would let you pay by instalments. They can't all be so hard hearted. if what you say is true, your poor cat must be dying a dreadful death or is indeed dead by now. How can you be letting this happen? Have you tried to feed him by hand? Have you tried to tempt him to drink?
If you can't or won't help him you must at least have him put to sleep out of his misery. You can be prosecuted for allowing your pet to suffer like this.
To be honest I can't believe the vet sent him away like that without a suggestion of what's wrong. Cats will get very depressed when like this and crawl away to die. Hopefully you've done something since you last posted?
I know this looks like we are all getting at you, but you have got to do something hon. have you tried giving him milk from an eye dropper/syringe, and if you mash some cat food, he should be able to lick it off your finger. if he cant do thet, then you must take him to the vets. either to be put right or put to sleep. X Thinking about you,....please let us know how he is, and how you are. X
I did see lb. I just refuse to believe that if you rock up to the PDSA or any decent vets with a sick animal in tow that they're going to show you the door. The cat needs treatment.
My beloved cat has now been put to sleep, he apparently wasnt in pain and the vet said its more likely to be a brain problem which could cost anything from £5-10,000 as he will need to be referred and then they may not have been able to do much for him, the vet recommended being put to sleep and the not eating didnt help him. I tried everything with him, including hand feeding and lots of cuddling. I loved him with all my heart, he was my friend and the grief I feel is truly awful. Thank you for your comments.
The stray cat that adopted me had the same problem just before bank holiday. I though she had been hurt when she somersaulted from a gate.
All bank holiday she hardly moved and then could not jump up, but worse had trouble getting off things like sofas, so I had to lift her - what indignity - how she protested. Her back legs and tail had spasms. I am out in the country and had my car booked in for MOT and service on the first day after bank holiday so decided to take her to the vet immediately my car came back, but it was too late. By now I thought she was paralysed and I could not sleep ! The next morning she just yawned, got off the sofa and has been fine since !! A bit wobbly at first. I do not understand how or why.
However I did research on the web and discovered dozens of other similar cases where the vets could find nothing with scans or Xrays or blood tests, but most cats seemed to heal over time.
I am NOT saying do not go to the vet. But I imagine that cats can damage themselves and recover in their own good time, so take heart.
PS I am sorry about my last post - I had not read that your little cat had been put down. How dreadfully upset you must be.
Perhaps my post will be of help to someone else.
I have tried to post this 2nd post but no success, so if it does appear twice, I apologise.
i'm glad that you did try everything for your feline friend and sorry that it had such a bad outcome for you. of course you loved him and through your tears think of the good times you had and that you did do the right thing for him - even though it was the worst for you. i will be thinking of you now. x
I can still shed a tear over a dog who died 20 years ago. He would never have left my side if he had a choice. And others since then. It's very sad and very painful. X
petal....have you read what has happened to liquidspace and her cat? it has unfortunately been put down and i don't think your comments are appropriate. try reading a post in full before commenting.
