Dog Has Ccd,

Not the best of days, it's just been confirmed that Eddy (Todays Avatar) is suffering from the Canine version of Alzheimers, we've been keeping a diary of strange behavior for a month or two, which has got worse since we moved (6 weeks), daft things like getting stuck in the kitchen by standing behind the hinge-side of the open door waiting for it to open, and getting stuck in corners by not thinking to turn around. He's just turned 8 yrs, he's fit as a butchers dog physically, and has a really nice disposition but is becoming a case of Care in the Community.
Never come across this before, does anyone else have experience of it, and any helpful advice would be welcome, don't think he's in any physical discomfort, just confused. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that..it's bad when your pets are I'll..they can't speak to let you know how they are..

There are some pills he can go onto, but the vet thinks we would be better off monitoring progress for a while as we now know what we're dealing with and it's early days.

I've heard of it, but only on this website, apparently another symptom is when they just sit and stare into space.

He's loved, he loves you, care for him as long as you feel comfortable.
Pets are heart-breakers but we wouldn't be without them.

I know it's not the same Baldric, but my Mum has it and it's hard to watch them disappear before your very eyes..She's still with us but not at the same time :o(

It does seem to be very similar symptoms mazie from what we're learning, it's a bit like, 'Lights on no-one at home'

Personally, I'd get him on the tablets soonest, but you know your pooch and your vet.

Agree with Alba. In the human form the earlier you recognise it and get on the tablets the better it is

I am not sure what the normal average life span of a Doberman is but it does seem to have hit earlier than I would have expected.

My last dog was a Lab/GSD and was like this at the end. Walking into corners and getting stuck and trying to find me in the flat - even repeatedly walking past me in his search. I was lucky that it didn't get too bad (he was able to function and enjoy life) and he died at the age of 14 of a bladder problem. He was a rescue dog and quite unpredictable - when he went senile he started being nicer to people.

Eddy - use this to your advantage, get double treats and food. :-)

He's spoiled anyway, he won't miss out.

he might be a bit better once he gets used to his new home , lots of reassurance and patience is needed with people so iwould imagine he will need the same , i hope you have him for a good while yet xxx

Aw how sad for you to watch this and for him to go through I don't have any advice but being an animal lover I can only feel for you and him and hope there is something that can ease anything that may be uncomfortable for him. Sending hugs to you x
