Poor thing! Black Spot has just come back from the vet with a head collar, not impressed. He was very off colour and clearly in pain this morning, and the vet diagnosed a huge abscess on his bottom, which hurt his leg and his tail as well as other bits. Nurse Boxy is now armed with rubber gloves and a scary array of medication and sluices for him.... I may be some time :-(

Anal glands?
ah, the joys of pet ownership :-(
Question Author
Apparently not, wolfy, although the abscess was impacting on them. The vet thought it was more likely to be a cat-bite which (as you know) goes really bad after only a couple of days :-(
Cat bite on bum = cowardly cat trying to run away from fight.

Ouch!

Knowing Black Spot, I'd be surprised to find him running away from anything, I'd assumed it was one of his normal rolling fights rather than a parting gesture.... We thought it was a groin injury, you could see a red swelling on the inside of his leg. Being a very hairy cat, I don't often look at his bum.....
Poor old boy ! Bet he's not too impressed with the world....good luck nurse boxy, you could be sporting some war wounds yourself shortly !!

Good luck with that then boxy, we have Thuggles (scabby tabby) as well as the dogs, I'd rather face the dogs anytime!!!
Baldric is so right. Dogs are much more reasonable than cats. I am sure that our kitty friends really are planning on taking over the world - by driving all the humans insane.

I hope that Black Spot's bum heals up. Have you to give him tablets? It is always dangerous to attempt that.

Princess Merlin usually goes for Frankie's face and, as you can see, he has a mainly white face, so it is easy to see his wounds. He's a wimp.

Day 2, Part I safely delivered..... he's cheesed off being cooped up in the spare bedroom but he's not allowed out....

I have to give him 2 lots of different antibiotic tablets at different times, and 2 painkillers ditto. Plus (bleah) sluice the wound with saline twice daily.

So far, so good. He's much more perky.
how is puss today
Question Author
He went back to the vets for a checkup and the vet was very pleased with the way we've been able to keep his wound clean. Not healing yet but going in the right direction. Thank you for asking!

He has to keep in isolation at least until we go again on Thursday - it's the only way we can keep him indoors - and he's certainly missing company so we have to remember to keep going upstairs to entertain him.....
Thanks for the update boxy, I was wondering how he was. Poor boy, he must be feeling lost away from his buddies, but all in a good cause.
Question Author
He is - just been up to see him. The wound is very clean but the dead skin is all starting to abrade and the underneath new skin showing through, so it's a question of keeping it clean.... I've just given him a crab stick, that cheered him up!

Update: he's having stitches at the moment, to pull back the gap left by the abscess :-(

I can go and pick him up at 3pm today.

He's very cheesed off, having to be isolated from the others and kept indoors on these nice sunny days :-( but otherwise he's being a model patient.
awwww hope he recovers soon x

Post-Op checkup update:

All healing well, has to stay in confinement for another 10 days until he has his stitches out. It's such a shame he's missing all this good weather, but we daren't risk infection of the wound. All looking good, though!
Hiya boxy ... Wee small hours here, very windy night ! Very glad to hear your boy is doing well, that must have been some abscess ! Xx

It was, steff - the size of a small soup spoon bowl :-(
