Dog Lovers

I haven't been away from 2008 and I told you before I would like to go to London in a few weeks time. I am loathing putting Maxie into kennels cos I knew Harvey was always sorta unhappy when he came out.

Last year I got Harvey with a girl called XXXXXX recommended by 3 vets and even this morning rang another vet and he recommended this same girl.

Well I have to say when she looked after Harvey for 3 days last year to let me get to a wedding what she didn't say about him on the Monday wasn't normal. He was a bold dog, he wouldnt come back for her and this and that. Now I was taken aback cos I thought a dog lover definitely would have great control over dogs. Never would I get XXXXX again.

I have no dog lovers among my friends only one and bless her she said she would take him but it could run to 4-5 days and while she says she is not sick - she is. She is only 66 but believe me would pass for 86 - has copd and other personal sicknesses. I am finding it hard here in Belfast to get anybody to take him into their home (Maxie) that is. I did tell these vets how I felt about XXXXXX. Not a good dog lover to me if you ask me.

Now for all of us dog lovers - no matter where we place them on hols - how do we genuinely know they are being cared for well when are we are away.

Is kennels the only way for him cos I do need a break not from him but from many other issues.

I think JJ what has happened is, this young lady (highly recommended so likely a dog lover too) has criticised your little pal and you have clearly taken it deeply to heart.

Take the kennels route instead and grab the break you need.

You've not indicated where you want to go on holiday.

If a UK destination is acceptable, there are loads of hotels that accept dogs, so why not simply take Maxie with you?

I'm not criticising Jenny here in any way, but I walked into town Wednesday morning, I passed a mature Lady walking a small dog on an extending lead running about 10ft in front of her, as I passed it on the other side of the footpath it swung 'round behind me, jumped up the back of my legs with dirty feet on light trousers, and bit my left calf, luckily it was too small to do any damage. When I politely (I'm not rude to Women) pointed out to her that I was a Dog owner who would be mortified if my Dog did that and the fact that she was laughing achieved nothing but to give Dog Owners a bad name, she kindly told me things about my Parentage that I didn't know. Why is it always small Dogs that are never trained properly?

sorry don't get it -she had a 'badly behaved' dog previously, has a new dog so it must be the same? I thought this new dog was a rescue with 'issues' and it seems to have settled in since she had it. I don't see why people can't cut her a bit of slack, all she wants is to find an appropriate carer for her dog so she can go away for a few days.

I am back from groomers - I was just getting the hair away from his eyes and fluffed up a bit. I have been lucky - he has turned out a beautiful dog and lovely natured. Yes Buen I know about hotels taking dogs but again I would be out and about in London and again not everywhere I could take him.

My pal in in Plymouth lost her dog recently about a month ago - they had a celebration dinner for him and she sent me a photo of a batch of buns (unbelievable) of his face. When she does go away she is lucky a 90 year old used to look after him and the pal did say this past year and a half the dog was getting vicious particularly around children. Yet going back to Harvey - he never nipped or bit one person. But I will get through this - if not I won't be going away it is simple as that but thanks for your answers anyway.

Wish I could help you jj, but I live in England. I understand you not wanting to put him in kennels, it was a route I was never keen to take either. I didn't go on holiday when I had my beloved dog, as he wasn't too good a traveller, but I was more than happy to put my life on hold for him, if that's the right expression, as he was a LARGE part of my life anyway, but as someone on here has already said, loads of places take dogs these days and with my last dog, I used to go to them and had a wonderful time.

ah thank you Janbee - you know I sorta think that there are people (Idont know them) you know next street kinda thing would take dogs on but wouldn't know where to start to look for them.

The kennels I know just feed, water them and run them up a run but the dogs miss the compassion and personal touch that their owners give them.

Anyway will have a yarn with my 66 year old friend and sees what she says . Or as Mamy says - get it out of the road and put him in the kennel - he could be ok. I know Harvey when we were outside the kennels - braked with his hind legs and shook like a jelly baby and it broke my heart.

I genuinely know Zac is being looked after. We're very regular customers and he starts to do that silly doggy whine as we pull into the yard like when he wants to go for walkies.

There was a fantastic kennel that I had Harvey in the beginning - a real posh place with underground heating and a lovely manager. I rang him last year when I went to that wedding but he had died - he was only 44 years old.
