My dog has started licking the top of his paw, we tried to look at it, but he goes beserk, so we borrowed a muzzle, and managed to feel round it, cannot feel anything i.e thorn etc, his paw is fine underneath and he is walking ok, will take to vets if he keeps licking it, but just wondered if any ideas on what to do in the meantime.

It's difficult to suggest anything without knowing the cause. Have you thought of all the possibilities listed here?

My first guess would be a bee or wasp sting. I'd probably try to bathe foot in warm water but it doesn't sound as though he'd be that co-operative.
If it is a bee/wasp sting best to put an ice cube on it. You must run cold water over the ice before applying it.

Hope he is ok.
If hes an older dog it might be arthritis - our Cairn was doing it - he`s 9 - we use Yumove once day - £32 for 120.

Hes just over 2 years, I guessed it must be something rather painful, to have him pull his paw away and growl and snap we have managed to put some ointment on was going to give him a paracetamol in a piece of cheese to dull the pain but not sure if that is wise
Has he broken a claw?
Absolutely don't give him paracetamol or any other human painkiller - it's toxic for dogs.
crapatcryptics you seem to be paying over the odds for your Yumove. Lots of places cheaper. £17.99 for 120 here.

If you can't see anything fs, I guess a sting in the best bet. Hope you get it sorted.
Tilly has Pardale tablets (Paracetamol and Codeine) for her arthritis but there is a problem with distribution at the moment, apparently. My vet suggested half a paracetamol in its place.
What is the weight of your dog Tilly?
16 Kg, LB.
Split claw is my guess
Thank you. That probably means if I ever had need to give mine a painkiller in an emergency a quarter of a tablet should do it. He's just over 8kg.
It could be something like an irritation to grass that he has walked in. Washing his paw may help but won't do any harm.
Splitting a paracetamol into quarters might be a bit difficult, LB. Do you have a pill splitter?
Actually Tilly I do. Due to my sick cat it is my latest acquisition. Unfortunately it's no good at actually making the cat take the pill;-)
The pill splitter I have is useless. I more often than not get a shredded pill. It's infuriating!
I hope your vet can pinpoint the problem, Fruit. x
