Maybe she had something on her skin and the scratch fascilitated entry of the bacteria. I remember loads of hype in the newspapers years ago about nectotizing facciitis developing in hospital patients. It can be caught anywhere because it's bacterial.
The first day that I was adopted by Frankie and Princess Merlin I was attacked by Merlin. She bit me nine times in one hand and it took months for the infection to clear up (not helped by me being diabetic).
It comes with the territory to a certain degree. A dog that attacks its owner does so for only a few bad reasons. Cats bite/scratch etc because you are doing something wrong and they are annoyed with you.
This woman's experience was extreme but I think that all Cat slaves tend to forget that they are not fully domesticated animals but they are cute and intelligent killing machines.
