My Dog Is Frantically Eating Grass, Ivy, Weeds, Anything He Comes Across.

Any ideas what's wrong please. Vets are shut. Any ideas? He's still doing it.

It sure was Naomi. I'm up but he's still lying in bed.
He slept through to 5am which I'm so pleased about. Have to try and get his loose tooth out today if I can. I'll phone the vet at 9am.

Phoned vets, been told tooth won't be taken out today as the tooth puller is full up plus he has to be assessed over time. It won't be pulled out on Tuesday either. Is this usual. Once again I'm fuming as he is so miserable and in pain. His pain medication doesn't seem to help much.

Whatever the hospital vet has told them. I suppose they have to assess whether he is well enough to have the tooth removed. I'm really trying not to think they are spreading over as many visits as possible because they charge for each one! Got to go. xx

I'm back from the vet without him. Vet says dogs don't usually stop eating because they have toothache so she needs to explore to find the reason and also rehydrate him and take bloods etc. She also said it was more likely to do with his pancreatitis. I have to pick him up at closing time and either bring him home or take him back to the vet hospital if he needs to be in overnight. I had to drag him into the vets and he was shaking non stop all the time. Panic stricken when he was walked away from me. Nightmare.

What a horrible situation, ladybirder. At least he is being looked after.
Seems odd to me that toothache doesn't stop an animal from eating - if doing something hurts, they stop doing it.

Yes I will Barry. Apparently pancreatitis can cause dogs to lose their appetite. Learning something new every day.

Going to try and concentrate on Wimbledon for a while.

Thanks Pasta. The more I think about the pancreatitis the more I think the vet could be right. I hoped he'd not have another episode but it looks like it's chronic, not acute. Need to bite the bullet and ask the vet what his chances are of recovery.

Have you any idea how old he is? It is horrible when they are off-colour but the vets can find nothing wrong.

But, if he is refusing to eat there is certainly something going on. I hope that the next vets visit is happier for both of you.

I wondered his age pasta. He has had pancreatitis before ? Poor boy, you will take care of him . Best wishes .

Wolfe and AA as he was a rescue we don't really know but he is somewhere around 12.5 - 13 years I think.

Anne it's different this time from his episode of pancreatitis last year (same time I think). Last year he was sick 14 times on the bathroom floor, bless him, not on the carpet in my bedroom. He was throwing himself around the flat in terrible pain. This was middle of the night. I got up and took him to an all night vet in Brighton. They put him on a drip and saved his life. He's not throwing himself about this time. He's quiet, withdrawn, not eating or drinking. Fingers crossed.

Oh my, he is a sweet dog. I can only wish him and you well. If you believe him to be in pain ,ask the vet for analgesia,.

it's very worrying, my old english went off his food the other week, and he eats like a horse normally, he ate something in the garden err a weed or a small stick, probably mooching grass and a weed was ate with the grass, would not eat for three days, then eat did his business out the back, and i could see what looked like undigested twigs i think and a very odd colour mixed with what looked like clear jelly, got better after then wolfed down his food as normal, i hope all goes well for you and you dog.

Thank you again everyone. Well we are both home now and he is OK, not 100% yet but OK. It wasn't his pancreas the vets said. They don't know what it was even after loads of tests done under sedation in the vets all day. Got to keep him warm and quiet, not to mix with other dogs and must take all sorts of medication prescribed for him. So we'll see how we go. Annoying not knowing what went wrong so I could attempt to stop it happening again. Thank you again for all your kind messages and tales of your mutts. Don't we just love 'em;-)
