My mother has an overactive thyroid which was diagnosed many, many years back. She has been taking medication for it ever since and has regular tests but to the best of my knowledge she has not really suffered any noticable symptoms - either short or long term.
Sorry, I may be confusing this with the under-active thyroid problem ( which is more common ) where the symptoms are going to be pretty much opposite to your own and you take medication to increase the thyroid levels rather than reduce them. In either case I think treatment once diagnosed is usually pretty successful. Found a good link which explains symptoms and treatment for overactive thyroid : http://www.sparkmd.com/overactive_thyroid.htm
overactive thyroid symptoms/signs - feeling hot (heat intolerance), weight loss, fine tremor, protruding eyes, irritability, palpitations/fast heart rate, neck swelling (goitre), ... to name but a few. Treatment includes medical management of symptoms e.g. beta blockers to slow heart rate to medical treatment to permanently reduce the gland's activity - radioactive iodine may be used for this purpose, to surgery for removal of part of the thyroid gland to reduce the amount of thyroid hormone you produce to normal.
