my kitten is 5 month old why does it meow all the time unless it is being petted it even meows when it is eating

What type of cat is it? Some cats such as Burmese meow as they are 'talkative' cats. How long has the kitten been away from it's mother?

he is a bit of everything we have had him about 10 weeks at first we thought it was cos he was missing his mother but he hasnt got any better

we have a cat who is about 10yrs, and he meow's a lot, especially when he just comes in, i think he is a bit insecure and likes to know that there is someone around - he only started dong it since his brother cat died last year.
i think it should calm down a bit in a while, if not you could take it to the vets just to check there is nothing wrong.
however like said above it could just be a 'talkative' cat.

I have some cats that never meow and some that just walk around the house meowing up a storm to no one in particular.
One kitty meows if i happen to look at him as if to say, "what?'"
Some casts are just talkers, i especially love it when they chirp and coo though.

is it a boy or a girl?, if a girl she sounds like she's on heat my kitten is 6 months and does'nt stop crying all the time there's nothing wrong and she's become very affectionate towars me and rolls round on her back! they can come in to heat from 5 months. she's booked in to be done on friday but it sounds like that is the problem with yours hope this helps
