the american doggy sites talk about satin balls to build up skinny dogs and give them a shiny coat. the recipes have meat and eggs but also talk about molasses and gelatin and total cereal.

It is so difficult to get the balance right when making up your own recipes, which is why I always prefer a commercially prepared good quality complete food. There are foods for all life stages, and I know they have all the nutritional requirements, and my dogs look good on what I feed (Eukanuba) so why change?
Occasional treats of either cooked or raw meat such as chicken wings are given, but I do not think on their own they provide enough balance.

You can get tripe from Anglian Meat Products which is prepacked and frozen, either in mince form or free flow cubes. This does not smell very much, and if you put it in a contained with a lid on to thaw out you won't smell it at all.
Most pet supermarkets stock it, or they do deliver all over the country if you want to buy in bulk.

sorry meltoadhall, perhaps I am opening a can of worms, but am interested to know what is wrong with feeding Hills or Eukanuba. My dogs are fed Hills, but supplemented by chicken or beef, both fresh from the butcher, cooked with pasta and vegetables so they have some interest. My last two dogs died at aged 14, so cant see what wrong it did them. My present girls have wonderful gleaming coats, so something must be right? Snappy, what do you feed your dogs out of interest?
I suspect the objectins are less to do with the contents of the food and more to do with the so called 'unethical' treatment of the animals used in the formulation of the foods.
I would venture to suggest that people have been brainwashed by the 'so called' ethical animal rights group PETA, but if you read my thread on this a bit further up, you wlll see just thow ethical PETA's treatment of animals in their own care really is!
