puppy toilet training
hi i have a 14 week bassett and she will go outside but she will also think nothing of squatting down in front of you while your in the kitchen. we have put paper down but she uses it when she wants to but also does it on the floor my husband is getting fed up with her and thinking about getting rid. please help .

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Toilet training can be a very long and tiresome problem. My collie is 11 months old and he still has the occasional accident! I would invest in a crate for overnight and when she is alone. It isn't cruel as many people say, the dog will appreciate its own den. Your pup is unlikely to soil in the crate and when you let her out just put her straight in the garden for a pee and poo and praise when she does. If your dog soils in the house you can only really scold her for it if you catch her in the act otherwise she wont know why she is getting into trouble, when you do catch her at it give her a firm no and put her in the garden...she'll get the hang of soon!

As the link says if you praise her and give her the treat when she returns to you after the wee she will think that she is getting it for returning to you (not doing the wee!).

By teaching her it�s ok to go on the paper, you're making it harder for both her and you. She doesn�t know the difference between a papered floor and a non-papered floor. I don�t know why these �pee-sheets� are even sold!
Take her out on a lead (that the very important part!) into the garden, after she wakes up, after feeding, after playing, and when she shows any signs of wanting to go (circling or sniffing at the ground, for instance). You need to watch her to pick up her signals.
For a 14 week old puppy, I�d take her out on a lead into the garden every couple of hours. Don�t just let her out � take her out on a lead.
When she�s weeing outdoors, tell her �be quick� or �wee-wees� or whatever you want to call it, and when she�s fn full flow, give her lots of praise and a treat. Get really excited about her doing it right and she�ll get the hang of it.
If she wees indoors, its not her fault � its yours for not seeing her signs - so don�t blame her. If you catch her at it indoors, pick her up with a �ah-ah�, put her tail between her legs, and carry her outdoors to finish � on her lead. Keep praising her good behaviour but ignore the bad.
And keep doing it � you need to reinforce her good behaviour. Don�t assume that just because she�s been doing outdoors for a day or two that you say to yourself that �She understands now � no need for me to keep training her�. Believe me, it doesn�t work!
A crate is good � but don�t use it as a punishment. The longest you should leave her in the create is 4hours maximum. Its unusual for a dog to mess in the same place that they sleep.

14 weeks is so young, she might get the hang for a couple of days, and then go right back to square one, as has been said.
Please don't "get rid", they take such patience and a good routine (see above!!!) but it's all so worth it.

Get rid of the husband!! No seriously in my experience husbands are not as tollerent and teaching him to be tolerant is harder then teaching the dog where to go.
As said she will probably go every couple of hours so be on your guard and try to remind her regulally to go as La Diva says. I did not have any problems with using paper in the house as I had small children and going outside with the dog and letting it out and noticing it subtilly asking to go was hard. It was easy to stand in the kitchen and point at the paper in a shallow tray(stopped wee running all over) with baby in arms etc. Mine got hang of it real quick and was soon barking to ask me to open the door to go out. Keep persevering and be consistent and regular. All night will be a while though. Again where i liked the paper as at least it was in the right place when you got up. Good luck.

Our Husky Holly used to do really similare things! the back door would be wide open and she would stroll back in and take a pee behind the door!
I tryed to follow a puppy book, as it was my first dog! I used to put her on the grass and say do the toilet, when she did i would praise her and reward her with a treat. If she had an accident then i would take her to it and say "no" and immediatley put her outside again! Its a long process like the other comments have said. Its time and patience.
Holly still sometimes has accidents but normally if she is desperate or i "mess up" her routine of going out to the toilet!
Keep at it, all of a sudden it just comes to them!

Oh really? I thought you got some really helpful answers! I would have to agree with all those he suggested re-training your husband....he sounds like a dumb-ass to me. I would lay money on the fact that you spend more time cleaning up after your pup than he does! Listen to the advice given....it's all good. If you think it's not helpful....get rid of your puppy....she, atleast, deserves a chance in life away from the ignorant animals that call themselves her owner!
