Jack, our Collie, was 3 today (well, sort of....we think his previous owner lied about his age, so he is somewhat older, but say she was honest...!)

He got a new collar, a rawhide frisbee (a wonderful combination of 2 of his fave things-something to catch and something to chew!) and squeaky tennis balls, after much searching...He got roast chicken for dinner, with roasted parsnips and sweet potato, and baby new potatoes. He is one full dog!

I wondered what you lovely pet owners did for your animal's birthday....so any stories are welcome :) x

Congratulations to Jack, only about another ten years before he grows up and settles down!
Max doesn't get birthday presents but at christmas, while I get the usual unwanted aftershave etc, he ends up with about a years supply of extra special doggy treats, I guess it shows whose top dog in the family

lankeela, thank you. Ah, you know Collies well then!! He is mad as heck that he can't get off the lead until his stitches are out! So I have a very frustrated woofer.

paddywak that's so funny! My friend sells the Big Issue, and his old dog, a wonderful greyhound, used to get bundles of treats, especially around Christmas. He was such a well-behaved dog, and very patient with kids and other dogs. Admired by everyone!

Well I have been throwing squeaky tennis balls across the room all morning....
Happy Birthday Jack...Its so nice to hear when other people are just the same....We are dead softies when it comes to our household pets.. two dogs...three cats.... two g/pigs all get extra treats and toys plus special dinners when its their birthdays. One year we had a go at doing a doggy birthday cake but it was a waste of time , they just turned their noses up at it and looked as if we had given them something awful, so we never did that again. g x
i buy pressies for all my dogs birthdays and xmases.
also early this year my little dog was one and i done a party and invited people with dogs and i made a doggy birthday cake and special doggy food. also i did human food and cake. then i did little doggy bags for the dogs to take home.some people thought we were mad but when people came they said they enjoyed themselves so much that they were going todo it. its all the craze in america
I 'found' a Mini Schnauzer for friends who wanted a young dog but not a puppy. They held a 'Christening' party for him and we were all invited and asked to be godparents! He was given sparkly collars, doggy t shirts and lots of toys and treats.
I know some people think this is way over the top, but I'd rather see a dog 'spoilt' like this than cruelly treated, and I know this dog will never be thrown out onto the street or beaten, or bred from time and time again.
I know people (usually those who have never had a pet)
think this sort of thing is over the top, but they have no idea just how much our friends mean to us. After all no matter what we say when we get then, about how they are going to be "trained" etc they soon manage to creep into our hearts and become part of the family
Anthropomorphism perhaps? - Anthropomorphism is the attribution of uniquely human characteristics and qualities to nonhuman beings. I guess this encompasses throwing Birthday partys for animals and giving them presents / treats.
People attribute human qualities to toys, products, and machines, and they design toys, products, and machines to enhance this process. Our anthropomorphic perceptions and ideas influence how we interact with animals, robots, and products-- how much we like them, how much we trust them, and how much we rely on them.

Many leading scientists consider anthropomorphism to be a misleading and self-centered folk theory about animals or objects. Until 2004, the Pittsburgh Zoo did not name its animals publicly, for fear the public would think of wild animals as pets or people.

A different point of view is exemplified by Darwin, who argued that the difference between us and animals is only a matter of degree. Some biologists working with apes and chimps agree, as would people who consider their pets to be family members.
Hello leelapops sweetie , happy birthday to little Jack xxxxx

some people think we are mad for doing parties etc. did anyone see that programe onn bbc one earlier this year called the aprentice where they had to design a dog product. well the winning team designed a wardrobe, and i fell in love with so much that i emailed pets at home who bought the idea that night. then 3 months later i got one through the post for nothing. my little girls are everything to me, as if it wasnt for them i wouldnt be here. my family thought we were mad in the begining but even my brother dotes on them and buys them pressies he even helped me organise the party.
but dosent it just proof that people that treat animals like this really show just how much they love their pets and that they could never be cruel.
and there must be loads of people that spoil their dogs with blingy collars and clothes other wise you wouldnt see it in the shops, you have to only go on ebay to see people bidding on items that some people would laugh at.

Hello lovely people, thank you for all your stories :) I love to hear about all the good times you have with your pets; non-pet people don't know what they're missing!

garner, what a menagerie you have! I am pleased you treat them all: birthdays are special for everyone! Jack thanks you for your wishes ;)

TIGGERLIT that's mad! Hope your little one had a good day; sounds like you throw aoo the best parties!

lankeela you are very right (need I say!) As long as you don't "baby" a dog, I think there isn't a problem with treating them as a member of the family: after all, they undoubtedly are for most people!

paddywak, I was full of good intentions when we got Jack, my first dog. However, as well as creeping into our hearts, he's also managed to creep onto the sofa and onto our bed at night when my partner's at work and I am asleep and oblivious! And as long as he gets off when we tell him, I couldn't give a flying...They are truly special aren't they :)

bm thank you to you and Porsche of course! Jack blushed at the kiss, but soon asked me to return it!

hundreddolla, in a way yes it is anthropomorphising, but wild animals and pets are somewhat different contextually: if you get a pet, I would argue that it becomes a member of your family. I wouldn't bring a wild animal home (although I would love a lemur!) and expect it to live as a pet would. And as long as you don't make them too human, in expecting them to reason and be reasoned with, then it's not a problem. What IS a problem is the woman I see with her kids on the way to school-she has a ratty little miniature something in a coat that yaps at everything on the way past, without a word from her-totally antisocial...last time I saw her, she was CARRYING it! Much like you would hold a baby in fact....Disturbing!

Jack sends woofs to you all :)

Oh bm. A card! That is so sweet thank you! I forgot to open your link before posting my last book!

Jack started running up and down the stairs when he heard it! :) Thanks XXXXX
Hiya, leelapops - I'm a bit late in posting, but belated happy birthday to Jack! I agree with everyone else - people who have never had an animal companion just don't know what they're missing (even when you get a small, ginger cat, scratching at the bedclothes at 2a.m., wanting to get in with you & waking you up!!) K xxx

Aw Kleiber, no worries, how are you? Thanks for your birthday wishes! Jack is now 3 yrs and 1 week. And he has just transformed into this well-behaved, calm, not-at-all crazy dog, almost overnight...PAH! I wish. OK that's a lie-I love him for him! But he does underestimate the importance of quiet time!

It's so true, pets are wonderful. x
I'm fine, thanks, leelapops - been away for my new job quite a bit lately, but I'm home now. Got a lovely welcome from all my lot when I got back (shattered) on Friday night - the dogs behaved as though I'd been away for a year, not just a couple of nights! I'm off to bed in a mo' cos I'm up early in the morning - long drive ahead, but I'll be back later in the week. Take care, K xx
