i have a miniature schnauzer puppy now 7 months old. is she in season? - she keeps licking her vagina. she has been weeing quite a bit more than usual but i haven't seen any discharge. could this be due to her size or her constant licking? she is also quite swollen around that area, but again i'm not sure whether she has licked herself into that state!! Haven't met any dogs on walks lately so no sniffing has occurred.

I would say most definitely yes. As she is swollen then this is a sure sign. She may either be licking clean any discharge so you would not see it, or it could be what is termed a clear season. Please ensure you keep her away from any male dogs, and make sure she cannot escape from your house or garden, as she will be just as keen to find a fella as they are to find her! As you have not noticed the actual start, then she may be several days in, so could be 'ready' at any time. Can you carry her away from the house on walks, or take her out in the car, as this will stop local dogs from beating a path to your door. You are very lucky if she is such a clean little girl that she keeps herself totally clean.

Only other main cause of constant weeing would be cystitis, but doubt very much if this is the cause in this case.
If it were, cranberry tablets help clear it up.

will make sure i take her for the walks rather than letting the children then!

Be really careful as some years ago I was walking my bitch turned round and a dog had sneaked up on her and next day she was at the vets for the morning after injection You will also lay a scent trail back to your house

Now she has had her first season, if you are not planning from breeding from her (no offence intended, but if you are so inexperienced as to not know what a season is I would not recommend it), why not book her in to be spayed at the vets, abut three months from now? This will save all the problems of worrying about randy local dogs getting to her, and prevent any number of medical conditions such as pyometra or mammary tumours later in life, and also phantom pregnancies (watch out for this after about nine weeks from the season, when she may think she has puppies).

thank you lankeela but i am not entirely bereft of brains, we all have to start somewhere and my last dog was a rescue who was pregnant when we got her and was aborted and spayed by battersea so we never saw the symptoms. your condescending manner was not necessary. i am a woman myself but i don't generally display the symptoms described!
