Female cat

I have a 2 yr old female cat, i took her in from someone who no longer wanted her,
My problem being, she dosent eat hardly anything, all she lives on is the jelly or gravy from the pouches of cat food, she wont touch the meat { no shes not a veggi } and she eats cat treats mainly which cant be good for her, ive seen the vet he has checked her over and told me she was over weight, i cant see how, and said if shes not ill now then eventually she will be as shes not getting all the vitimins she should be getting, she wont drink milk just water, does anyone know why she could be like this, also i hasten to add is that shes very viscious you have to warn people not to touch her when they visit. Help please. x

Have you tried giving her the biscuit�s (go-cat and the like)?
They are 'complete' meals so she will be getting all of the vitamins etc she needs. It�s good she doesn't drink milk as the lactose is not that good for them really, so water and cat milk (it has the lactose taken out) is much better.

It could be she just doesn�t like the taste - cats are bl**dy fussy in my experience! My cat won't touch the pouches just tinned tuna and cat biscuits and drinks mainly water.

Also does she go out? She may be very good at hunting, which would explain the extra weight in comparison to what you see her eating?

Hi, thanks for your reply, ive tried most of the dry biscuits from the cheapest to the most expensive, any new ones they bring out, ones from the vets that cost �9.00 a bag, with those ones she liked them the evening i gave them to her, i got so excited lol, when the morning came she turned her nose up at them :( shes had fresh meat, mince, fish, you name it shes had it to try.

Hi, how long have you had your cat? Could it just be that she is stressed and still needs time to settle in? When I got my cats from the Cats Protection, it took a good couple of weeks for them to feel at home, it may be that she is still finding her feet and will be more prepared to eat properly once she is more settled. If it is not this, then it could be that she is simply fussy. One of my cats also does not like to eat much cat food, she mostly eats the gravy or jelly from the food and leaves the lumps of meat dry in the bowl. She will eat some dry food, and drinks water. She has been like this for years and has managed to survive for nearly 16 years!
If your cat is eating new food at the first offering, then turns her nose up at the second, then it could be that she is spoiled and has been used to eating what she wants when she wants it. You could try putting down some food and then if she does not eat it, clear it away and don't offer any other food until the next feeding time, hopefully she will soon starting eating once she realises that nothing else will be on offer, until her next mealtime.
I take it the vet has checked her teeth to ensure that she has no gum problems or any other problems that will stop her eating?

Hi Sue, thanks for reply, ive had her for 1 yr so shes settled i would have thouught, as for the other sugestions ive tried them too, i take up the food and dont feed her til evening, it makes no difference, the vet has checked her mouth and teeth and they are fine, as she is vicious do you think it could be down to the amount of treats she eats, its like giving a child too many sweets and it makes them hyperactive, maybe?
