goldfish advise.
hi wondering if anyone can help.
yesterday i walked into my sons room in the morning to find that our goldfish had leapt from its bowl and was lying motionless on the floor,as i steered my son out the room as i didnt want him to see it it was about 15 minutes later when i got someone to lift it, the fish then went from being motionless to it giving a little flip.so she put the fish back into the bowl and after a minute or two of it gulping it then started to swim again.some of the red scales on the side it landed on have been rubbed off .what we are kinda worried about though is his eye on the side that he landed seems to be either swollen or something coming down over it,its hard to tell exactly. we didnt expect the fish to live tbh but its now a day later and it is still swimming away.
does anyone have any advise please ? thank you.

It landed on the kitchen floor with an almighty smack and lay still. i thought it must be dead, but I put it back in the bowl, and it started to swim, and here we are, eighteen months on, still going strong.
I think fish can stun themselves when they hit a floor or hard surface, but they seem to recover, as yours appears to have done.
All yo can do is keep an eye on him, and either get a bigger bowl, or lower the water level in the one you have to prevent his kamikaze actions in the future.

Most fish can survive quite a long time out of water. Goldfish are quite a hardy species which is why they are so popular.
The fish will probably be ok.
Some years ago found one of my Common Carp(about 3lbs) under a bush beside my pond, must have been there at least a couple of hours.
Popped it back in the pond and its fine now and weighs about 8lbs.

I was unfortunate enough to be looking after my sister's goldfish when this happened to me! However the fish didn't survive after it had appeared to be on the floor all night. I only found it in the morning when I opened the door and very nearly stood on it! Needless to say I have not been asked to look after the new fish yet!
