smelly spaniel ears

I have recently adopted a 4 year old Cavalier King Charles spaniel. He is a beautiful boy and a great wee character but his ears seem to pick up everything and the smell from them is not very pleasant. Even when I bath him his ears smell just as bad by the next day. The smell is not from inside his ears. Any ideas any spaniel owners out there?

I would get the hair on his ears clipped, especially on the underside as this tends to collect wax, but at least then you will be sure there is no infection, either internal or external.
