Flaky skin in dogs
My border terrier has an excellent coat but has developed a few small lumps, surrounded with flaky skin, which are itchy when combed. I accidentally knocked the top of a lump and it revealed a raw red area which I treated with antiseptic cream. The vet said it wasn't sarcoptic mites and no signs of fleas.

How often do you bathe him and what product/ shampoo do you use?
Bathing dogs too often with harsh shampoos can dry out their skin and deplete the natural oils that prevent dry patches and sores. Also if the dog sleeps on a hard surface they can get what look like bedsores.

I would consult the vet again and ask them to do a skin scraping for microscopic analysis.

Thanks Daffy, been away so sorry for delay. Bed fine and don't use harsh shampoos. He likes swimming in the sea so generally rinse him and dry with a drop or two of tea tree in the water. Keeping him on dry land for a while.
Fewer spots tan last week. Don't think the vet I saw was very clued up so will try again with different one. Also he is a very sociable dog so temporarily walking him where he wont meet so many dogs to kiss and roll with!
