pit bull type dog - advice needed

Have just been asked by my neice for some advice and I honestly don't know what to suggest. She has a rescue Staffy x (vet says it is as does the rescue home) however, it does look pit bull like. Lovely, sweet natured bitch. She lives in a city which has a lot of problems with 'weapon dogs' so the police are aware of the breed type. If she takes it out unmuzzled but on a lead what could happen - could the dog be impounded, made to wear a mzzle or what. I really don't know so any help will be appreciated. TIA

There is no need for her to be muzzled as she is not on the official register. Tell her just to be very careful where she exercises her, make sure nothing can happen with people or dogs that could be cause for complaint.

Hi,
As far as I know there are no laws in place that say any dog has to wear a muzzle unless it has been ordered to do so by an authority such as the police.
When the Dangerous Dogs act came into place, any existing Pitbulls were supposed to be muzzled, but the law was never really enforced as it was hard to prove that any particular dog was a Pitty.
As long as this dog is under control there really shouldn't be a problem.

Why would anyone want to take a chance on a dog that may be dangerous, that may fight with other dogs, that may attack a child, adult? What pleasure or joy would you get having a dog that you would be constantly worrying about. A smaller dog that would need less exercise would be more suitable for a city environment. thanks everyone for your advice and comments - the dog is a real softie and being taken to training classes on a regular basis - it's a shame really that all dogs with a certain appearance are tarred with the same brush when some seemingly 'soft' breeds can also cause problems.
