Soaking them with a hose or powerful water gun is your best bet, you will have to lie in wait for them to appear and then soak the monsters.
There are tons of methods of frightening them off with smelly stuffs - some work for some of the cat population but cats are pretty awkward animals and are unpredictable.
There are sonic machines that are said to be good - but I heard of cats who sit on the machines whilst they watch over their domain in the neighbours garden.
I am not going to make any wheelie bin jokes. ;-)

I have cats and I have given my neighbours some of the cat deterrent crystals which you can buy in Homebase or any similar shops - it smells rank but it's better than cat poo. Other than that, a water pistol is an excellent deterrent - they soon get the message. The cats go for fresh soil or clean gravel for their toilet areas, so bark covering can put them off, IMO.
I have the expensive sonic deterrent and that works unless the cat is deaf.
