Were they high cocoa fat chocs?
It's the cocoa that the dog reacts to I believe; if it was the high fat/sugar variety of chocs such as cadbury or galaxy not as bad.
Lilacben, it can depend on how much your dog weighs against the weight of the chocolate consumed, have a look here. http://vetmedicine.ab...a/chocolatetoxici.htm

If in doubt your vet will have an emergency number, you can always ring the duty vet for advice. Keep a close eye on the dog in the meantime, it can affect the nervous system and make him very ill indeed. It's a chemical called Thoebromine in the chocolate which is so dangerous to dogs.

Many thanks guys, Ben weights about 38lbs. and they where Thorton chocolaes. different centers.
I think I'd still give the vet's a ring just to set your mind at rest, it's not the centres which might cause the problem (although they could make him sick), it's the chocolate which could harm him.

Hello again, I hav ejust got to keep an eye on him and see how he is tomorrow. He has been slightly sick twice, when he has had a drink.of water. Also I made a mistake with his weight.it should have been kgs not lbs. !!
Cheers lilacben, thanks for the updates - did you ring the vets?
Question Author
Yes, I must keep an eye on him until tomorrow morning. Keeping my fingers crossed he will be ok,.x
is there any chocolate in Thorntons.......?
How is your dog this morning?

Well wolf he is just the same as usual.! Scoffed his breakfast down and slept all night without any trouble. Think he must have a cast iron stomach.!! Many thanks for all your replies.xx
That's good - I had a dog who used to get a giant bar of Yorkie chocolate every week from my mum. Much later we found out that it can kill some dogs.
In the past we used to buy our dog a small cadbury's selection box...this was more than 20 years ago before we knew that it was dangerous...

I was just thinking back and rememebered Ben ate a whole christmas cake the other year............which was cooling on the side......it was about 9 inchs round. Only a small corner bit left. He was fine after that as well.! Good job he is a big dog.! I didnt know then that dried fruit like sultanas and raisins was also deadly to some dogs.!! Now I am sitting here and really fancy a chocolate or two but then remembered I didnt have any.!!!!!!!!
My now departed retriever ate 2Ib of quality street one night when we went out. No adverse effects except pooing wrappers for the next three days!
Most expensive bar of chocolate I ever bought...Bought one of those huge cadburys bars for my son and my dog got the lot! Phoned the ver straight away and she worked out the ratio of dogs weight to choc eaten and told me it was just over the limit. Had to get her there quickly and she gave her drugs and she vomited chocolate all over the surgery. All came to over £70 I think and she was fine afterwards.
A box of assorted chocs are probably fine because there aint much chocolate in them, and dark chocs are worse.
It can kill and it's no good waiting overnight to see how things are as it acts as a real poison. Apparently grapes can kill as well.Glad yours is ok but be careful in future,it's not worth the risk.
