Today we had a lovely day at my daughters who lives in Hitchen (Herts) she's got a lovely long garden backing on to woodland. This afternoon we witnessed 3 squirels stealing her strawberry's and running up the tree in her garden and jump from tree to tree in the woods, then come back and do it all over again, they weren't too bothered we were watching either.
Whats unusual about that? I hear you say....
They were Black squirels, yes Jet black. It was mum dad & baby and soo cute. Evidently my SIL tells me there's a colony of them in that area. Never seen black ones before...
Have you?

Hello Jem - that is different, I have seen very dark grey ones but never black.

Hello EDDIE I lived in Letchworth for six years. Used to see the black squirrels when I walked across Norton Common. They were very common.
wonder how this will impact on the native Red Squirrel population.
Hi LL,hope you are keeping well.
Drove past your place on Sat.on way from Lincs to Sheringham Gardens. There were four of us,plus grandson,so could,nt stop. One day maybe !

Apologies for breaking into your thread jem.
I was just about to ask that carmalee, I've never heard of black squirrels, I don't think there are any in this neck of the woods so to speak. I'm told that they are classed as vermin, and I'm not too sure about the 'cuteness' appeal of black ones.
Hi DG. Hope you enjoyed yourself at Sheringham. There was actually more traffic past last weekend than on the Bank Holiday weekend. Our is the house where the farm gates are kept shut and you can only see the garage from the road, not the house. We have hidden ourselves away behind tall hedges!!

Take care

I think the Black Squirrels, although spreading, are still mainly in North Hertfordshire with Letchworth as the most common place. It was over 30 years ago that I lived there and they were quite plentiful then, so they haven't really multiplied that much.

Hi EDDIE, We lived there from 1972-79, when we 'emigrated' to North Norfolk. One of our closest friends and neighbours in Letchworth was a Headteacher in Royston. Why on earth did they change the name of 'The Black Squirrel'?

Yes Norton Common is really lovely.

The town was still 'dry' when we moved away.
