Petition to change law for cats
122 Answers
It is 2am so I am unable to write a coherent chunk of text.
The following link explains what changes are needed to make motorists obligated to report hitting a cat on the road.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/...ucestershire-15457756
If this is something that you think is a good idea this petition is up and running
https://submissions.e...ov.uk/petitions/19369
I know that some local authorities scan dead cats to see if there is a microchip which will indicate the name and address of the cat and its staff - but many don't. Maybe that is something else that could be considered.

I tried getting my two to play fetch - but they just looked at me as if I was nuts.
hc - realisticall y I can't see the new law being implemented, but to have a pet go missing presumed dead is a horrible experience.

there is often a history of torturing and killing animals in those with sociopathic/psychopathic tendencies... this is deliberate activity not accidental killing...
take it out of the equation as it is not relevant to the discussion which is about the consideration of the feelings of others and the impact of not knowing what has happened to their furry friend... Maybe the RSPCa could be paid to take on the report collection/action role rather than bother the police...

I suppose because the average cat is not that big, that it doesn't affect traffic safety if it is knocked on the road, whereas the animals you have to report could, which is why they are notifying to the police. This is just a guess.
Although I have signed the petition, I can't see it becoming law. Plain human courtesy and decency and caring should be all that is needed, but some people just don't have it. If I knocked a cat I would stop anyway to see if was dead or not, even if there were no houses close by. I would hate to think it was lying there suffering. If it were dead and there was nowhere to enquire, I would remove it, if necessary from the road. It is distressing to others to see dead cats in the road.
The thought of my animals being just left on the road with no regard is horrific.

"flip flop there is a link to people hurting animals ,children and adults, , they did a study on killers and found a positive link"
I appreciate you didn't say I would do anything, but it is quite clear the inference you were making in the above statement. The inference may well be true (I wouldn't know), but the point is that there is a whole world of difference between hurting an animal accidentally and purposely.
Running over an animal is an accident.
Perhaps I am being a little too cold hearted, but I just can't see why people would be so upset over a cat. Its not as if its a child.

As someone who was walking back from work and found the body of her cat that had been missing for a day, and clearly run over, slung in a bush I too would advocate someone letting me know. That was a horrible find. She had a very distinctive tail and to see that little tail sticking out of the top of the bush and getting excited that I'd found only to find her hanging upside down having clearly been chucked was heartbreaking.
Given that I like my current (and previous) cat a hell of a lot more than I like a lot of the humans I meet then yes, I would actually be more upset if my cat died than some humans I know.

The petition, I feel, has been started using emotion and not logic. It would be almost impossible to police such a law. It could be the start of the change of law regarding cats.
A couple of years down the line we might see cat servants being sued for allowing their cats to cr$p in other people's gardens. The RSPB might take people to court for allowing their cat to kill birds.
I just know that people who could intentionally cause pain and suffering to any animal (even mere humans) is not a person that deserves to live in a civilised society.
I also find that whilst most people can tolerate dogs people seem to either love or hate cats. To be honest sometimes I fully understand the cat haters. :-)

Me too China. And even if you don't like cats it shouldn't be too hard to understand that a lot of people love their cats. I don't like a like a lot of people (well a few) but I can understand that other people might like them.
What is 'only a cat' to people like FlipFlop, might be somebody's best and only friend.

Well exactly Lofty, and the same goes for somone elses rabbit/mouse/lizard/very large spide collection... I wouldn't be at all arsed in the (extrememly unlikely) event of any of those pets being run over, but I would understand that the person who lost their pet would probably be devastated.
Well maybe I would be upset if I lost a lizard as I like lizards.
Not spider collections though, I would probably cheer a little bit on the inside.

flip flop >> Running over an animal is an accident. <<
not always, few years back there was an article in a local paper
A man walking down a country lane sees a car moving from one lane to the other
a drunk driver NO this was someone having fun running over and squashing hedgehogs, there were a few dead on the road, any other small animal would also be a target
the man picked a couple of the squashed hedgehogs up and took them home pulled out what was left of their innards and stuck a house brick inside
next night he put the hedgehog body with a brick inside down on the lane and waited
he did not have long before a couple of yobs in a car sped up and drove at the hedgehog
hitting a brick does the car wheel no good soon people started to drive round the hedghogs on that rochdale lane
