My new hip.....update

A few people have asked about my op and I'm sorry to say I haven't replied - until now. Sorry for not answering sooner. My leg is still very sore, although the swelling has gone down quite a lot. I'm still bruised and my leg feels as though it's been assaulted with a baseball bat. The scar is doing very well and the op itself has not caused any problems yet. I'm following the exercise regime that the physio gave me and I've been outside for a few walks. I'm going to try a longer walk today. So, all in all, things are going ok but it will take quite a few weeks before I start to be anything like normal. I'm going to ask the physio if I can start driving this week. I expect he'll say no, but you never know unless you ask. Thanks again everyone. You're all very nice.

So glad you are making progress and regular exercise as prescribed will build up strength. ♥

My mum's had both her hips replaced. There's little point pretending that it's not a long and (sometimes) painful recovery process, but it WILL get better and you're definitely over the worst. I don't recall precisely how long after each op she was allowed back behind the wheel, but I have a feeling it was about a month...

Hi there, glad to hear of your progress. Had my two hips replaced about 5 years ago - gave me a new lease of life. Was driving after 10 weeks with the first replacement (left) and after 8 with the second. Keep up with the exercise, it really does help although it can be bl**dy sore at the time.

People convalesce and get confidence at varying times from 6 weeks to NEVER......very individual.

Driving? I was so bored at home that i drove on the 10th post operative day...........I was fine, but it was stupid and Mrs sqad "b0llocked me"

with my first hip i was allowed to drive after 3-4 weeks. That was becuse i have an automatic and it was the left hip. After the second one, it was 5 weeks. The physio gave me the go ahead, not the doctor

Its all downhill now, Clarion. That sounds wrong as does "uphill" but you get the gist. MR beat me to the draw on the "one step at a time" - I always wonder what happens to the old bones?

Over the years I've had several knee operations. The best advice I was ever given was that I could drive when it was uncomfortable, but didn't actually hurt to slam the pedals down hard.

Keep doing the exercises, but rest in the afternoons. My leg swelled up if I stood for too long. I ended up in A&E one day because of that. I had a scan for thrombosis, but I was OK. I think it was 6-8 weeks before one can drive. The only thing I hated was not being able to have a bath or shower - just strip washes because my shower is over the bath. If I'd had a wet-room I could have showered.
