I would just like via these pages to say thanks to "Nungate" who posted on 30th November such a lovely verse about putting a pet to sleep.

On Wednesday we made the decision to put our beloved 21 year old cat Ben out of his suffering and reading this poem helped us so much.

All in the space of a week Ben went blind,deaf,and his back legs kept giving way,it was pitiful to see him so distressed we felt it was an act of love to send him to his rest. My husband sta No yed with him to the end and he is now sleeping in our garden. Naturally we mourned his passing he had been part of our family for all those years,and the house seems so empty without him.

So sorry you had to part with your beloved friend. At the end we don't want to see them suffer and it's the kindest thing. Have two of my beloved moggies resting in my garden plus the ashes of my daughter's mog.

auntie, that is sad, but comforting to know that you did the right thing by your old boy. Ben wouldn't have had any quality of life - he'd have wanted to go.
You will miss him, many of us have been where you are - but you know he's resting in peace now, not far from you. My thoughts are with you ♥

Auntie Moll, I'm so glad you found some comfort in that little verse. I didn't find it until after we had to put our lovely Jess to sleep, he was almost as old as your Ben, being at least 19 years old. I still miss him, though I know deep down it was the right thing to do, our pets leave paw prints all over our hearts and as long as we keep them there they'll never be truly gone and as we all know they are waiting by the Rainbow bridge for us to join them.

I understand just how you feel Auntie as we had to eventually do the kind thing and put our lovely cat to rest exactly 2 years ago now. He was 18 and half and he was such an adorable loving member of our family. We have his ashes and a photo of him in our front lounge and we often speak to him as we still miss him so much. We will never forget him but I hope it does get easier as years go by.

So sad to hear of your loss - 21 was a great age for a cat and like the others have said, he must have had a wonderful life, much loved and cared for to have got to that age. My 2 old girls are 15 and still (relatively!) sprightly, so here's hoping they will go on as long as Ben did. It IS the final act of love we can do for our pets - and they're all waiting at Rainbow Bridge for us. Nadolig Llawen (that's Merry Christmas in Welsh!) to you, too. K xx
