changing pond water

i have a pond that has a pump with goldfish in and i need to change the water. could any one please give me any tips on the right way to go about this so i don't cause too much upset to the fish! I have had the pond for a year and the fish for only a couple of months and i'm not too sure on what to do. many thanks

can you say why you need to change the water? we have had a pond for about 15 years and very rarely do we do a water change and then it is not a complete water change. Changing the water will alter the balance of the pond and you may end up with a lot of algae. If you have a problem at the moment, it may be due to stocking the pond with too many fish too quickly and the water needs time to adjust to the fish waste etc.

I second jules on this one - it can cause a lot more problems than it solves if you attempt to change the water.

Have you got a good filter, one that's big enough to cope with the size of the pond? It's vital that the pump and filter are sufficient for the volume of water they have to deal with.

Due to the rainfall that we have had recently I think that the water has been changed sufficiently for you not to worry too much bnabout the water quality. After saying that, it is not an excuse for not checking the water quality with a test kit. After all, it is not fish that you are keeping, it is water. If the water is not right then the fish will suffer.

thanks everyone - the water level has dropped, i think because of a small leak, which we have hopefully stopped, and the water is very brown so therefore how could i top up the water safely instead of changing the water.

If you ask in your local pond equipment stockists they'll have some additives that you put into the pond when you're adding extra water - this removes the chlorine and other harmful chemicals present in tap water.
