I was just wondering while walking around the supermarket that a lot of the meats must go out of date and be unsold and thrown away. Bearing this in mind has there been a study done on how many lives of animals have been wasted because of the meat going unsold. It's actually a little disturbing for me to think really.

It's really a self controlled thing. The farmers and slaughterhouses would not want to put effort into breeding, slaughtering and butchering the animals and the shops would not want to take up valuable shelf space trying to sell unwanted goods.

Zacs I agree but I definitely think that someone could quantify how many animals were bread and needlessly killed per year let's say.
I was trying to say that there's probably not a need, as the farmers and slaughterhouses will have had to consider this to maximise profits.

Zacs I wish there wasnt but due to the inefficiency and the priority of convenience for humans over the lives of animals I pretty sure there Is a substantial amount of waste. Maybe this is something I can look into myself.
I doubt all that much goes to waste. Any supermarket will have a reduced section for near end date products. If my local supermarkets are any thing to go by-these products are grabbed up quickly....little is discarded in the way of fresh meat and produce.
I think the waste comes from us as consumers but in these tough times, I'm sure this is quite small.

I truly hope so. Would be even better if we didn't eat meat though. I know one day will come though when eating meat will be considered barbaric. That's natural progression and I can wait for my son or his kids to see it.
Living as I do in cow country of the western U.S., you'd have to live several centuries before beef-eating came to an end... even then it would be only because we ran out of cattle.

Thing is, I think you may misunderstand the nature of how beef cattle are butchered and sold. Even grocery stores, much less stand-alone meat markets, cut only the meat that they need to stock their shelves for the day. The beef half (or pork or lamb) is hung in a temperature/humidity controlled room where it will continue to 'age' as roasts, chops, steaks or other cuts are removed, leaving only scraps suitable for hamburger... excuse me... mince (I learn semi-quickly). Very little, if any goes to waste.

and then there is dog & cat food.
I think you are wrong smilingcrow. Eating meat is natural to humans...we've been doing it for eons, and will continue to do so. It is what makes us strong.

Read the "Vegetarian Myth"
You may learn that vegetarianism is more harmful to animals and the planet than meat eating ever could be.
Look in your mouth. We have incisor teeth. Evidence of millions of years of evoloution.

My wife eats meat and I believe in the human race eating meat. But my take on it this. If you are not prepared to kill it then you should not eat it. The human race is great and we struggle to preserve nature. But how is that apparent in the slaughter of animals? We had to fight for meat and now we have it already killed and on a plate. Children don't even know where it's from. Im not talking about a chicken breast I am talking about an animals life who is self aware and who would rather live as opposed to bieng killed.
If you are not prepared to kill it then you should not eat it What a load of old cobblers. Why didn't you just post an anti- carnivore question in the first place?

Ok im sorry I'm new on this forum and I don't want to cause a stir. Sorry
They would not live in the first place if they were not bred for meat
Smilingcrow, there are lots of jobs that we would hate, or be too squeamish, to do, but which we benefit from others doing. We are not going to stop using the toilet because we couldn't face working in the sewage works. Working in an abbattoir may be one of those jobs. Why then, should people not eat meat unless they could face killing a food animal ? Somebody will do it for them, that's all that matters.
So if I am not prepared to grow my own vegetables I should not eat them?
Oh! Next door has a dog. Downstairs neighbour has two cats. Plenty of seagulls on the roof. Did see a fox trotting down the road last week. What do you fancy for dinner?
By the way, S C, you'll have to go much further than that to cause a stir on this site! We like stirs, anyway.Welcome to the forum.
