My son is going on holiday for 15 days. We went to see kennels and well satisfied. What I would like to know as his staffie is just over a year old my daughter has offered to take him from kennels about twice a week on her days off as he is used to my daughter .The kennels will allow her to do this and have him back by 6. The kennels assured us that they soon settle down so we don't know whether this might be a good thing or not. My son is concerned worrying that his dog thinks he has abandoned him. Replies from anyone that has done this will be much appreciated.
If the kennels is a good one then the dog will most likely settle although it might have been kinder to book him in over nights and weekends first for him to get used to the idea. We have taken dogs out of kennels for a friend to give them exercise when she was in hospital, the dogs enjoyed it and it seemed to help. make sure that your daughter is SURE that the dog will recall to her if let off the lead. i would take him beck earlier rather than later in the day to give him a chance to have his rea there and settle for the night. Might your daughter be able to use the kennels as daycare for the days she works and have him with her to sleep as well as on the days she doesn't work?
Provided the kennels are happy with this and the owner is in agreement, I really don't think it will have any effect on the dog other than he will get more exercise and attention on those days. Once the first visit/return is over he will soon realise he has not been abandoned (although I don't believe dogs think like that anyway). As said above, please ensure the safety of the dog while away from the kennels, as many dogs go missing when being 'looked after' by friends or family.
Would just add that I often kennel some or all of mine for various reasons, long and short term, and if I help my friend at her kennels they go in during the time I am there. They get used to their own kennel and happily go back in. My GSD boy is booked in for a few days shortly because one of my bitches is due in season but I will go and take him out for a run during the day when I can get there.
Yes the Kennels are ok with this. My daughter cannot have him overnight as she already has a staffie and they are a bit boisterous together. She has had him during the day before and I have too with their work patterns. But I cannot manage him for 2 weeks. You have relieved my mind with your replies as I know you are dog owners and we may just do that and take him out the odd days and weekend. Thank you for replies and will bear in mind to take him back well before 6.
