We appear to have a BLACK robin (one of this years brood,and wonder if this is very unusual?. I tried to take a photo of it today but failed (batteries down on camera)...

Not that unusual - it's like albinism. Uncommon yes.
In nature there will always be peculiaralities - albinism is the most common but black example of a species is also seen. A panther is just a black leopard.
Not unknown but quite unusual for a robin. The oystercatcher also has a black version and a small fantail bird in NZ has so many melanised versions that in same areas the black ones out number the normal ones.
