Bitch In Heat

For the past two out of three nights, there has been a woman with two collies on leads and one of them is in heat.
My black Lab Toby who is normally well behaved, just puts his nose exactly where it shouldn't be a stays there.

This stupid woman just keeps on walking and as I'm not too fleet of foot, was nearly out of site before I could catch up.

What is the "etiquette" for dog owners with bitches in heat?

I would have thought that they shouldn't be walked. Male dogs can smell them from about two ks away. Our bylaws here in Zim don't allow bitches in heat to be kept in town. Not that anyone seems to take notice tho.

When our bitch is in heat we do our best to keep her away from dogs, its not fair on owners of dogs and can cause dog fights etc, just silly!!

A: Always have a bitch spayed.

B: Anyone selfish enough not to do so should only ever exercise it at, say, 2am because I'm sure they'd only get upset if they took it anywhere with other dogs at play and a Heinz 57 put it in the family way.

put your dog on the lead chrissa, that's the solution. Problem is some breeds put that smell out for 3+weeks, and it's just impractical not to walk them for all that time, especially collies

Why should I deny my dog his fun and exercise just because of her dog? The other dog walkers this afternoon agreed with me. It is a popular spot for walking and this woman is the only one I've come across. There are plenty of places around where her dog could be walked away from others.

She also makes it worse by not stopping. He's only sniffing and if she had stopped I could have nipped anything in the bud.

i expect she is getting her dogs out of your way, rather than hanging about. Just put your dog on the lead when you see her and let him off when she's gone. imho it's unfair for her dog not to get ANY exercise.
If you are that flumped off, and there's really plenty of other places, you could take your dog to one of those

chrissa1, I agree. Those people exercising unspayed bitches in public places when other dogs are around are just selfish and ignorant. As I said, they'd go ballistic if some randy little scamp impregnated their precious unprotected bitch because of the owner's total disregard for nature taking its course. Those responsible won't listen, though, they just tend to get ratty. lol

So all other dog walkers with male dogs have to put their dog on a lead because of one selfish woman? No way. Let him fill his boots Chrissa, perhaps she'll learn then - not really.

well it is the law - dogs have to be under control in a public place. If the dogs can't be called back for whatever reason, they are not under control i suppose. i am just offering a temporary solution to chrissa as if the woman is as awful as she is making out, she's unlikely to change. Putting her dog on the lead for 5 minutes during his walk for a short time is hardly depriving her dog

Seems to me its your dog that is not under control so don't know what your problem is. Her dogs are on the lead. Put yours on a lead and walk it somewhere else.
