Unlike the human larynx, a bird's vocal organ is called a syrinx and is situated on the lower trachea where it splits to both lungs. There are several ring muscles around each 'split' and also on the main trachea before the split. These ring muscles can be consciously contracted so the bird can make several combinations of notes at the same time and even continue breathing while singing.
