Flea Treatment

My large black Labrador Ozzie has got fleas since he stayed with 2 other dogs while we were on holiday. Any advice on what is the best treatment? I heard Frontline is no good now as fleas are immune to it. He is right at the top of the scale for size as a Labrador a right big lump but daft as a brush.

I still use frontline on my mastiff. I get the one for extra large dog. It should be repeated every 3 weeks. If he has heaps of fleas you maybe best to take him to the vet for dipping then continue with a recommended flea treatment.

go to the vets as the treatment in the pet stores isnt strong enough to kill fleas...

it depends where you live. here in hampshire, certainly frontline no longer seems to work on fleas. Make sure you treat your house and car as well as the dog!! RIP flea is good for that.

I was talking to the vet and he had been to a conference where they said that in large parts of the world, Frontline no longer works. I don`t know about dogs but as far as my Mum`s cat is concerned, Imidacloprid works whereas Frontline doesn`t. Imidacloprid is sold as Advantage or Advocate (which has worming drugs combined). They sell it for dogs as well.

I use Frontline on my cat and my Westie did it only last week and it works very well on them. Have not heard here in Kent that Frontline is not wprking well. Good Luck.

Get Advocate Eddie, it'll do the job properly. I can highly recommend it as do others on here. FL not worked for 2 years for my cat or dog here in East Sussex.

Frontline spray is far better than any of the spot on treatments. Do it outside and don't shut the dog in anywhere for a while. You can only get the spray from a vet.

I've tried ordering advocate for cats online but they want me to post a vet's prescription before they will mail the product, i don;t take the cats ti the vet just for flea treatments that seems a ridiculous expense.

Dot the over the counter ones are not so effective, anything that is Prescription Only is much more effective. Most vets will give you a prescription for six months treatment but you do have to pay.

lankeela, down here in hants, frontline spray doesn't always work either.It has the same active ingredient as the spot on, fipronil and fleas and ticks are getting resistant.

I switched to Advantage for both the dog and cat. Used to require a prescription,but that's no longer the case. I buy online from VioVet.

thanks pasta I hadn't found that supplier, I've ordered the one for small cats, i'm not 100% sure the frontline is still working, I haven't found any fleas on them at all but they do scratch occasionally, mainly after they have been sunbathing on the grass.
