Dog Odour
19 Answers
I have just moved into a house. The previous owner had a dog. The kitchen still has a sickly dog fir/a dog was here smell - but not elsewhere in the house. The kitchen has been cleaned all over but still persists. Any special technique/chemicals etc to get rid of it. Oddly enough my cat doesnt seem disturbed by it.

Like those who know and take seriously the implications of Toxocara Canis (which is endemic in many countries, not least the UK) I would not knowingly share living quarters with a dog. My suggestion would be to acquaint yourself with the risks and then have the place (the whole house) cleaned to a similar level as a hospital isolation ward between occupants - and make sure it really is done. I would not consider moving into a house with a history of dog presence until that was done.

I'd rather have a shorter life that involved the love and loyalty of a dog(and a cat in my experience)than a long life without the joy a pet can bring. All animals kept as pets(except maybe goldfish)cause some kind of smell but in my experience its all worth it.Maybe try asking advice from a vet as they know the biology of dogs and their smells
Just to invite further bile from some people I will mention that the mother of my grandson has started suffering epileptic fits. She has four dogs which have free reign of the house. Two were acquired recently as puppies and relieve themselves on the floor and I saw one lick the teat on the one month old infant's bottle. One of the symptoms of toxocariasis is epileptic fits - I feel sorry for the prospects of the child even though others may applaud the conditions he is being brought up in ("fun " ?). She and I get on well because she is otherwise a nice person and she knows that while I think dogs are pleasant animals I do not want to have them all over me or my food, etc. Each to his own I say, without pouring vitriol onto those who don't share my views or preferences.
