Wet weather in 2012 was largely blamed for the fall in the UK's ladybird population last year:

The greatest number I've seen was simply uncountable. I was in Hunstanton when the sky went black with ladybirds. A stretch of the promenade was totally covered with them for over a hundred metres, with several thousand ladybirds on every paving slab. (So the total number must have run into many millions!)

I've got loads of them in the house, they've been hibernating in the window frames.

I heard something on the radio the other day that said the only rhyme about ladybirds is a dire tale of a conflagration and a traumatic family disaster.
