My Dog Has Scraped Away A Patch Of Lawn.

And now it's rolling about on the dry earth. At first I thought it was playing and maybe it is. But the thought struck me that it might be taking a dust bath.
It gets brushed regularly but not washed very often. Any experienced dog owners have any thoughts on this behaviour?

It is a 'dog thing'. There may be an interesting smell that she feels the need to roll in.

Does she 'need' bathed? You could always book her into the local beauty salon and they can wash her and maybe trim her and do whatever else dogs need done.

My first dog loved water so giving him a bath was simple. He also found the river Tay to be an excellent bath.

sandy did you ever get to the bottom of the scratching and puling out clumps of hair? what did the vet say?

My dog has hollowed out some earth under a shrub, forming a kind of den.
On hot days he loves to go under there and scratch around or just chill out.
I think its an instinctive thing.
A dust bath is very likely, I think in your case.

My malamute does this in dry weather, and digs big holes to sit in especially when it rains. He ends up looking like a huge dirty dishcloth, revolting critter. I think it's just a doggy thing to do, he certainly seems to love doing it.

Woofgang, I never did get to the vet. I felt where she had been scratching and there were no lumps and I don't think she has fleas. Based that on the thought that if she had I'd be getting bit too.
I've got her booked for a haircut and a shampoo on the 7th.
