Swearing, Profanity, Blasphemy Etc ... Religious Influence

I have just seen an old school friend on facebook wittering on that god has made her life better and its all gods doing etc etc, over some really trivial things.

and i thought 'oh for gods sake' ... then i thought 'christ almighty!', then i thought 'jesus christ' ... then i thought ... is there any way for me to show exasperation without using word of religious influence?

im sure there are loads of others.

i am not remotely religious and in fact and quite staunchly atheist so it was interesting to me to note that i couldnt think of much else to say - that wasn't the F or C word. ... and even the F word often ends with 'hell'.

i suppose there is 'flipping' or 'blooming'... but thats usually ended with hell or heck - and heck is really just a way of saying hell without technically blaspheming.

its no big deal obviously, but it was interesting for something who actively tries to ignore or remove religion from their life that i could not think of anything else straightaway - that it was my first thought

i know religion is deeply ingrained in our lives much more than many people actually realise - its just the way things are..

There was a time when "taking the gods name in vain" was a far worse sin than using many of the "normal" swear words we use today.

Look how this swear word was used for the name of a road in days gone past (I cant type it here).

I'm an atheist but often use Kerrist on a Bike and Jeezus Aitch Kerrist but the most oft used expression for exasperation is 'F*%& me gently!'.

I use "for crying out loud" quite often, or "for f***s sake", depending on the company. If I find myself about to say "oh my god" I always change it to "oh your god", as I haven't got one.

Joko, why do you feel the need to swear at all? Was always told it demonstrated a poor grasp of the English language. There are plenty of alternatives to profanity.

The "Oh my God" we seem to hear so much seems to have been superseded by "Oh my days" round here, I don't know what it means but it's less religious.

A good swear helps if you need it, what words one uses seem personal choice.
